Cherry Blossoms in Bloom in Virginia by Dana Tatar

One of my favorite things about Spring is the beautiful cherry blossom tree in my front yard. I look forward to the few weeks that this tree is in bloom every year. The cherry blossom was my initial inspiration for my project. That design element had me looking through my stamps. I settled on the gorgeous Geisha Cling Stamp Set.

I’ve always admired the intelligence, poise, and grace of the Geisha. Her talent for entertainment, makeup application, and colorful traditional dress, is truly an art form. My goal with this project was to capture some of that beauty.

Geisha Glass Test Tube Art by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

I mimicked the look of stained glass with paint to transform simple test tubes into vibrant pieces of art. I filled each tube with Haiku poetry. The brief, lyric, style of the Haiku shares a similar fragility with the glass. The mask-like properties of the Geisha makeup lend them an air of mystery that I brought to this piece with the rolled poetry. The curiosity of what the Geishas look like under the makeup and the enticement of the rolled paper bundles elicits the same feelings for me!

How to Create Line Drawings from Stamped Images by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

1. Stamp Geishas onto a piece of paper. Place a sheet of deli paper over the stamped images and use a pencil to create a simple line tracing of the Geishas. On the same deli paper, use tracings from a coloring book to fill in some of the white space around each Geisha.

2. Insert the deli paper tracings into the test tubes. Use black puffy paint to transfer the line drawings onto the outside of the glass tubes. Let dry overnight.

3. Use Glass Graffiti to color the glass. Mix and blend colors on a craft mat or directly on the glass.

4. Tear Haiku poems from the journal. Roll the poems and secure with a small wooden clip.

5. Insert the rolled Haikus into the test tubes. Seal the cork to the tubes with a piece of washi tape.

I created a short video to help show a 360 degree view of each tube.

I plan to send these tubes to my girlfriends so that they can start each day holding a piece of art and centering themselves by reading a short poem.

Thanks for stopping by today! The next stop on the hop is Ashley's blog.
